The Houston Chronicle reports that a division of the British-owned oil company, BP, is now officially a felon following acceptance of a long-pending plea bargain to resolve a criminal investigation into the deadly 2005 explosion at the company’s Texas City refinery. U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal ordered BP to pay the agreed-upon $50 million fine and comply with blast-related settlements with regulators while on probation for three years. Some 15 workers were killed in the March 23, 2005 explosion. Many others were injured. BP says $50 million is the highest fine ever imposed for a Clean Air Act violation. Victims say the fine is too small. The incident rocked the oil and chemical industries in Houston and around the country. Video of the blast has been used in crisis team training as organizations around the world question how they would respond to such a major event. BP has been both praised and criticized for its media response to the explosion. |
