Scott Bowles reports in USA Today that journalists are hot again....at least in the movies. At a time when newspapers - including USA Today - are cutting back on their news staffs and TV stations are letting go of reporters and anchors, actors who play reporters have plenty of jobs in Hollywood. Coming out Friday: State of Play with Russell Crowe as a brash newspaper man investigating the death of a legislator's mistress. (How come I never got those kind of investigative stories?) April 24: The Soloist with Robert Downey Jr. playing LA Times columnist Steve Lopez, who befriends a homeless musician. Fall: All about Steve (no, not me). Bradley Cooper plays a CNN cameraman who catches the eye of an eccentric crossword fan (Sandra Bullock) who follows him around the globe. Reporter Bowles (a real reporter) says reporter movies are sometimes a hard sell at the box office i.e., Good Night and Good Luck which was critically acclaimed, but brought in just $32 million. |
