The swine flu has gone from a serious problem in Mexico to a potential pandemic in just a few days. From a crisis management standpoint, has the U.S. been taking the right moves? What about Mexico's reaction? Considering all the preparations over the past few years in getting ready for the avian flu, did those preparations pay off? Are we ready? So far, Okay, but considering all the work that went into the pandemic flu stuff in 2006, I kind of thought they would have been better prepared. I kind of wonder how much not having a Health and Human Services Secretary is hurting things. |

I guess it is no longer the SWINE FLU. The new name is the H1N1 Flu. The WHO doesn't want people to be scared of pigs, I guess. The news media is still reporting it as the swine flu, however, or using both names. I guess you can put lipstick on a pig and give it the flu, but it is still a pig. |

Is it just me, or does the Swine Flu seem to have all but disappeared as a topic of discussion? I guess people aren't as scared of H1N1 as they were the dreaded swine flu. |

Given the escalating news about the swine flu, I thought that, as a researcher in supply chains and risk management, it would be wise to step back and to think about the major issues. We are reading about travelers from Mexico being isolated as they arrive in China and a hotel in Hong Kong essentially quarantined along with its guests. Clearly, corporations as well as governments will be faced with how best to deliver needed supplies, in the case of an escalating health crisis, while, at the same time, trying to minimize risk. I suspect, given the reality of the swine flu and its spread, that we will be seeing more electronic transactions and communications, since "social distancing" is one way of stemming the dissemination of contagious illnesses. The spread of the swine flu is now global in nature and the impact on supply chains, hence, can also be expected to be global. |

The impact of swine flu is now being felt globally across all continents, and across societies. There is a fear of it scaling up to a much larger epidemic. |

The Swine Flu - or, H1N1 - is back, but the vaccine doesn't appear to be in great supply, at least not in the US. In the 1970s, the government rushed the vaccine and history indicates they overreacted to the situation. This time, the flu seems more deadly than previously thought, but there isn't enough swine flu vaccine to go around...at least not yet. Is it just me, or does the US government just have a hard time getting it right? Of course, there's the story that the prisoners at GITMO in Cuba are getting the vaccine while susceptible kids in the US aren't. Wasn't that great public relations for the Obama Administration? Doesn't seem like the government has this crisis under control just yet. |

Based on what I've seen - or I should say, haven't seen - this year, I'd like to nominate the Swine Flu for one of the most mishandled crises of 2009. And that includes a lot of other contenders when you think about it. It's like they knew it was coming and they had time, but still botched it up. There are still kids out there who are dying because there isn't enough vaccine out there for them. This is more than a crisis. This is outrageous! |
