Not sure whether he ever had media training but former NTSB official Peter Goelz did a terrific job speaking about the Air France plane crash over the Atlantic. I caught him first on CNN and later on CBS. In both cases, he gave the reporter great sound bites and spoke about some complex issues in every day language - something a lot of people can't do. One tribute came from CNN's Jack Cafferty following Goelz' interview with Wolf Blitzer. Cafferty said he was impressed with the interview. He said Goelz knew what he was talking about and explained it in easy-to-understand terms that even he could understand. I didn't catch his name on CNN, but when I saw the same guy on CBS a few minutes later, I figured he must be on the network's speed dial in case of mysterious airline crashes. Goelz was identified as a former managing director for the NTSB. Here's a link to the CBS clip, about a minute and a half. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=5055437n |

I just caught the guy - Peter Goelz - on CNN last night. You're right. He's pretty good. I like the way he explains some pretty technical stuff in a way that makes sense. He's also pretty good with eye contact, animation, etc. And, oh yeah, he's good with sound bites. |

Peter Goelz is a good spokesperson. There's no doubt about that. He's also probably not only had media training, but there's a good chance he's also taught it. He's a senior vp with O'Neill and Associates, a New England firm specializing in crisis communications. |
