Helen Thomas, an icon in the Washington press corps for decades, retired this week after inflammatory remarks about Israel. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100607/ap_on_bi_ge/us_thomas_israel_remarks At 89, Helen Thomas has been on the front lines of Washington news for more years than most reporters can remember. She was probably at retirement age when UPI "reorganized" some years ago, but she kept on going. She was the reporter's version of the Energizer Bunny. But as she kept reporting and kept getting older, it was more like sitting Presidents and the Washington press corps looked the other way as she asked questions during White House press conferences. I had the honor of meeting Helen during her earlier days as a reporter. I'd like to remember her that way, rather than a prize fighter who stayed around for one fight too many. |
