We have a media training session coming up with a drug company and could use some assistance in finding out more on how drug companies handle statements concerning recalls, etc. We'd like something more current than the Tylenol espisode. Is anyone aware of any news coverage where the company went on camera to discuss the recall and/or drug problem? Any help would be appreciated. |

Unfortunately, most statements on recalls, etc. seem to slowly happen over a long time because of all the lawsuits. Heparin contamination has been making the news for almost a year now. Overview: http://www.nolan-law.com/baxter-heparin-contamination/ From their first news release on February 28, 2008 when they announce the recall: http://www.baxter.com/about_baxter/news_room/news_releases/2008/02-28-08-heparin.html To their most recent statements on December 17, 2008 when Baxter International admits Heparin was contaminated: http://www.thenewsenterprise.com/cgi-bin/c2.cgi?053+article+News.Local+20081217163539053003 |

Just an update on the training session with the pharmaceutical company and drug recalls. Essentially, the company, consultants, attorneys, etc., all pretty much concluded there was NO WAY they would conduct interviews or media briefings regarding a recall barring some extraordinary circumstances. Their current strategy would be to utilize their distribution network, pharmacies, physicians, etc., along with their web site. Each recall would be coordinated with FDA and would be designed based on individual circumstances. In the event they did have to conduct a media briefing, it would only involved well-coached spokespersons who were well aware of the involved drug and the circumstances behind the recall. |
